Bungie, the creators of ‘Halo’ and ‘Destiny,’ is being acquired by Sony for $3.6 billion

On Monday, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it had struck an agreement to buy Bungie, the creator of Destiny and the original Halo, for $3.6 billion, marking the latest in a string of major video game purchases.

Sony announced that the studio will continue to be multiplatform, with the ability to “self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play.” Despite the acquisition, Bungie’s future games may be released on systems other than PlayStation.

Microsoft Game Studios previously acquired the formerly independent game company, which is best known for designing and producing the Halo franchise on Xbox from 2001 until 2010. After breaking relations with Microsoft in 2007, 343 Industries took over the Halo franchise.
