‘Blade Runner 2099’ series is officially in the works

In the not too distant future, the Blade Runner universe will be expanding. With Prime Video’s official approval of Blade Runner 2099, a forthcoming live-action limited series sequel that will expand the Blade Runner universe as we know it, fans of the enduring science fiction franchise may now properly buzz.

For this next sequel, Blade Runner director Ridley Scott will serve as executive producer, and Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa will act as both executive producer and showrunner. Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049) will join the group as an EP who isn’t writing. In a statement, Vernon Sanders, head of worldwide television at Amazon Studios, expressed his excitement about introducing the sci-fi brand to the Prime Video audience. Sanders emphasized that collaborating with Scott is the best course of action and that the company is thrilled to broaden the universe:

“The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers. We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

The forthcoming series, Blade Runner 2099, will be a follow-up to the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049, which was directed by Denis Villeneuve. It is produced by Amazon Studios and Alcon Entertainment. The co-CEOs and co-founders of Alcon, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, made a statement in which they expressed their enthusiasm for the sci-fi franchise’s expansion and hinted at the existence of a “new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created.” They continued, “We hope to live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of Blade Runner.” They acknowledged that the bar is set high for the forthcoming sequel given the labor put into prior chapters.
