Barcelona break world record for women’s football match attendance in el clasico win

With 91,553 fans in attendance for the second leg of Wednesday’s Champions League quarterfinal at Camp Nou, Barcelona and Real Madrid set a new global record for a women’s match.

The previous attendance record for a women’s game was achieved in 1999, when 90,185 spectators flocked to the Rose Bowl to witness the United States and China play in the World Cup final.

With a 5–2 triumph over Real Madrid on Wednesday, Barcelona rewarded its adoring fans with an excellent performance on the field. On an 8–3 aggregate, the team went to the Champions League semifinals.

After winning the Champions League last season, the outcome kept Barça’s prospects of winning it again alive. This season, the team has already won the Spanish Supercopa and won the league for the third time in a row earlier this month. They have won all 25 of their matches in the Primera Division, scoring 138 goals and allowing only seven.
