James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has reportedly made more than $2 billion USD at the international box office six weeks after its debut, according to Variety. Following blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, and Avatar, the historic achievement makes Avatar 2 the sixth movie in history to surpass $2 billion USD.

Notably, three of the six aforementioned movies are Cameron productions. The distinguished director, in addition to The Way of Water, also directed Titanic and Avatar. In addition, four of the six films feature Zoe Saldaa, who plays Neytiri in Avatar and has roles in Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War.

With a stunning $2.9 billion USD in sales, the original Avatar movie, which debuted 13 years ago, continues to occupy the top rank among the highest-grossing movies. Titanic finishes in third with $2.19 billion USD, followed by Avengers: Endgame in second position with $2.79 billion USD.

The events of the 2009 movie are more than ten years in the past in the December-released The Way of Water. At the center of the plot is the Sully family: Jake, Neytiri and their children. According to the official synopsis, the movie chronicles “the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure as they fight for their home on Pandora.”
