The mysterious romance author Susan Meachen emerged to social media more than two years after she was said to have passed away to admit it was all a lie. NBC News reports that Meachen’s passing was reported on Facebook in September 2020 when a person posing as her daughter said she committed suicide.

Meachen’s death, according to the person who uploaded the since-deleted message, was caused by the romance novel community’s persistent abuse and harassment. The author purportedly discussed her difficulties in a lengthy Facebook post published weeks before it was claimed that she had killed herself, in which she allegedly admitted to having attempted suicide.

Since then, Meachen has promoted her books on Facebook and raised money for organizations that work to prevent suicide. According to NBC News, Meachen’s fellow romance writers also sent funds to help with burial costs.

“I saw the auction that was going on to help raise funds for her funeral,” romance writer T.E. Ridener told the outlet. “Authors are usually asked to donate gift cards, E-books, or swag (bookmarks, postcards, magnets, etc.) to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.”

Rewind to this past week, when a message was posted on The Ward, Meachen’s exclusive Facebook group with 770 members, by a user posing as her.

“I debated on how to do this a million times and still not sure if it’s right or not,” read the post, which was shared by Twitter user @Draggerofliars. “There’s going to be tons of questions and a lot of people leaving the group, I’d guess. But my family did what they thought was best for me, and I can’t fault them for it. I almost died again at my own hand, and they had to go through all that hell again. Returning to The Ward doesn’t mean much, but I am in a good place now, and I am hoping to write again. Let the fun begin.”
