Amy Winehouse Biopic ‘Back to Black’ is Announced

According to Deadline and Variety, a new Amy Winehouse biopic may be released. Sam Taylor-Johnson (known for her work on Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Grey) will direct the movie Back to Black, which Matt Greenhalgh will write. Studiocanal, Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Tracey Seaward will produce it. The Amy Winehouse Estate, which includes the late singer’s father Mitchell Winehouse, reportedly supports Back to Black.

Amy Winehouse passed away at the age of 27 in July 2011. Although Mitchell Winehouse criticized it, Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film, was released years after Amy’s passing.

Following the success of Amy, it was announced in 2015 that Noomi Rapace would feature in an Amy Winehouse biopic written and directed by Irish filmmaker Kristen Sheridan. The Sheridan project has not advanced, and in 2018, it was claimed that Alison Owen and Debra Hayward will create a biopic of Amy Winehouse that had been approved by the Winehouse family and written by Geoff Deane. The producers of the revised version of the biopic are still Owen and Hayward.

Not to be confused with the documentary Amy Winehouse – Back to Black, which covers the creation of the Back to Black album, is the new biopic.
