Alec Baldwin files lawsuit against film crew in deadly ‘Rust’ shooting

Alec Baldwin is attempting to clear his name nearly a year after the fatal shooting incident on the set of Rust, in which he fired a prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and seriously injured director Joel Souz.

According to the New York Times, Baldwin filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday against the armorer and three other crew members. Baldwin’s attorneys assert that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, as well as David Halls, the assistant director, Sarah Zachry, the props master, Seth Kenney, the supplier of the weapons and ammo, and Kenney’s company, PDQ Arm and Prop, were all negligent in Hutchins’ death.

“More than anyone else on that set, Baldwin has been wrongfully viewed as the perpetrator of this tragedy,” the lawsuit reads.

“This tragedy happened because live bullets were delivered to the set and loaded into the gun, Gutierrez-Reed failed to check the bullets or the gun carefully, Halls failed to check the gun carefully and yet announced the gun was safe before handing it to Baldwin, and Zachry failed to disclose that Gutierrez-Reed had been acting recklessly off set and was a safety risk to those around her,” Baldwin’s cross complaint said.

For the “immense grief” he has experienced since the horrific event, Baldwin is requesting specific damages.
