The last straw for Koeman was a 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday evening, capping off a terrible start to the 2021/22 season.
Barcelona has only won four of their first ten La Liga games, and their 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano dropped them to the ninth position in the standings.
In the Champions League, things haven’t gone much better for Barcelona, who have lost back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the group stage.
Since the summer, Koeman has been in a vulnerable situation, and his job has been made much more difficult by Lionel Messi’s departure.
“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first-team coach,” a statement from Barcelona read.
Their focus will now shift to finding a replacement for Koeman.
Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi is doing an excellent job for Al-Sadd in Qatar, and he would be a popular option among the club’s supporters.
