A last-ditch lawsuit seeks the cancellation of the Formula 1: Miami GP

After residents filed a complaint against the race, the first edition of the Miami Grand Prix is allegedly in jeopardy of being canceled.

Some Miami Gardens residents have long opposed Formula 1 establishing a presence in the state and are making one last push to get the new expansion removed. The first race around Hard Rock Stadium is scheduled for May 8, giving only three weeks to make a final judgment on the topic.

Judge Alan Fine, according to the Miami Herald, was “frustrated” at having to hear the case on such a short timeline. “Numerous courts before me have resisted the temptation to jump into something that hasn’t been issued yet,” said Fine. “Shouldn’t I wait to see if the city manager issues the special events permit?”

The report mentioned that lawmakers in Miami may not make a decision on the permissions until the days leading up to May 8. “We’re in this limbo state prior to the issuance of a special events permit,” he added. “It’s a very uncomfortable place for a court to be.”

The Miami Grand Prix will be the second American pitstop on the Formula One calendar, with Las Vegas expected to join it next year. Since its reintroduction in 2012, the United States Grand Prix has been hosted in Austin, Texas, however former host cities have included Indianapolis (2000-07) and Phoenix (1989-91).
