Officials working in Miami, Florida, state that at least one person has died and dozens are missing in the collapse of a 12-storey residential building.
According to Miami-Dade Mayor Danielle Levine-Cava, there are 99 people still unaccounted for as the number of people who have now been located is at 102.
The BBC reports that it’s unknown as to how many people were in the building at the time as the cause of the collapse is unclear, where half of the 130 units were affected.
The building in Surfside, north of Miami, was constructed in 1980 as a number of Latin American migrants have been noted as missing by their consulates.
Officials stated that relatives of Paraguay’s first lady are among those who are still missing. Rescuers have been unable to reach contact with the sister, brother-in-law of Silvana López Moreira, along with their three children and a domestic employee.
Officials also note that 35 people were pulled from the wreckage, with ten assessed and treated and two of those being sent to hospital.
