Lionel Messi has sent an emotional message to Ronaldinho as the Barcelona icon’s mother died aged 71.
According to AS, Miguelina Elói Assis dos Santos passed away from COVID-19 as she was admitted to Mãe de Deus Hospital in Porto Alegre in December after showing coronavirus symptoms. Brazil has struggled severely with the pandemic with over 10 million positive cases and more than 245,000 deaths in the country.
Ronaldinho had stated at the time that his mother was in hospital prior to Christmas but is yet to publicly comment since her death over the weekend.
Messi, who was emerging onto the scene whilst Ronaldinho was in his prime at Barcelona, winning two La Liga titles and one Champions League honour together, said on his Instagram Story as quoted by AS, “Ronnie, I have no words. I can’t believe it. Just sending you a lot of strength and a big hug for you and the whole family. I am very sorry, rest in peace.”
