The rights to Capcom’s well-known video game franchise Street Fighter have been purchased by Legendary Entertainment for movies and television.
Deadline claims that a film is currently in production, which would make it the first live-action production since Kristin Kreuk’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li from 2009, which starred the title character. The most prominent entry was the 1994 release of Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The original game came out in 1987, and Street Fighter 6 will be out this June.
The news of a Street Fighter flick continues the revitalized trend of repurposing popular video games for shows and films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the HBO series The Last of Us attracted 22 million viewers, making it the second-highest viewed network debut in the previous ten years. Even more people tuned in for the second episode, up 22%. HBO decided to renew The Last of Us for a second season as a result of the series’ steadily improving ratings.
