The most recent Creed movie, which stars Michael B. Jordan, had a record-breaking opening weekend for a sports movie.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Creed III outperformed the $30 million that the boxing movie’s producers had anticipated by grossing an estimated $58.7 million domestically this past weekend. This weekend, the movie earned an additional $41.8 million overseas, bringing its first weekend worldwide earnings to $100.4 million.
“This is beyond all of our expectations. And we knew that we had something special — we tested the movie and it tested great, but the public responded so resoundingly to it,” Erik Lomis, MGM’s head of distribution, told the Associated Press. “Everything went right here starting with the movie itself … It was just up to us not to break it when they gave it to us and we didn’t.”
The movie, which also stars Jonathan Majors and Michael B. Jordan, is anticipated to gross around $150 million worldwide, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing Creed movie to date. That estimate would surpass the revenue from the franchise’s first two films, Creed ($109.8 million) and Creed II ($115.7 million).
The third installment of the franchise, Creed, is the first to not feature Sylvester Stallone.
