Late on Tuesday night in Greece, a horrific train accident claimed the lives of at least 43 individuals.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the deadly accident a “unspeakable tragedy” in his opening statement and pledged that a thorough federal inquiry will be conducted.
“Our duty now is to treat the wounded and be by their side. From there, one thing I can guarantee: we will find out the causes of this tragedy and do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again,” Prime Minister Mitsotakis said.
At the time of this writing, the Associated Press reported that a passenger train and a freight train crashed owing to what is thought to have been “a traffic human error,” killing at least 43 people. Greek Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned shortly after the accident, it was confirmed, “as a basic indication of respect for the memory of the people who died so unfairly.”
A local station master has been detained in the meanwhile, according to Reuters, as the inquiry into the precise reason of the fatal crash proceeds. The individual has refuted accusations that he did anything improper and has instead blamed a “technical failure.”
