The critically acclaimed HBO series Succession’s forthcoming fourth season will be its final.
Jesse Armstrong, the show’s creator and showrunner, confirmed this in an interview with The New Yorker. Prior to beginning work on the Season 4 scripts, Armstrong claimed he had a conversation with a few writers for the Succession, seeking their advice on how the show could move forward.
“I got together with a few of my fellow writers before we started the writing of season four, in about November, December 2021, and I sort of said, ‘Look, I think this maybe should be it. But what do you think?’” Armstrong recalled.
“And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons,” he continued. “Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”
According to Armstrong, when they began filming, the decision to stop the show after four seasons had not even been made. Armstrong claimed that he was honest with the cast about the potential course of the show, telling them, “I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I think this is it.”
On March 26, Succession’s fourth season will begin.
