After only three months as manager of the Premier League team, Southampton has fired Nathan Jones.
After Saints’ loss to 10-man Wolves on Saturday, former Luton Town manager Jones, 49, leaves with his team in last place in the standings.
Following his appointment on November 10th, the Welshman presided over 14 matches across all competitions, losing nine of them.
This record included four straight home losses at St Mary’s and eight losses in nine Premier League contests.
While head coach Ruben Selles will manage Saturday’s Premier League game at Chelsea, first-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club.
Jones witnessed his team lose at home to fellow struggling Wolves despite being up 1-0 and having a man advantage on Saturday. Saints supporters booed as the game came to a close.
Instead of thanking the home crowd, he walked straight down the tunnel and claimed after the game that he was unsure if it would be his final game in command.
“I have never done that in my life before,” Jones said of his decision to immediately leave for the dressing room.
“In 390 games, I have never done that. But I am not sure if me going round clapping would have shown respect.”
Southampton supporters had chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” and “Nathan Jones, get out of our club” after their previous league defeat at Brentford.
Jones expressed emotion after the 3-0 defeat, claiming he had “let the players down.”
