On Sunday, Kanye West posted a message on Twitter writing, “Testing Testing Seeing if my Twitter is unblocked.” Last month, Twitter confirmed that West had had his account locked “due to a violation of Twitter’s policies.”
Twitter would not clarify which rules West had violated, but on October 9, he posted, “death [sic] con 3” on Jewish people. Earlier this month, Instagram placed restrictions on it as well. West posted on the right-leaning social network Parler that he had been “kicked off Instagram for 30 days.” He explained the restriction as a result of a remark he made regarding Jews to Russell Simmons, the co-founder of Def Jam Records and the clothing brand Phat Farm. His Instagram page can still be viewed.
Less than a day after Elon Musk, the site’s new owner, announced that he had restored numerous other suspended accounts, including former President Donald Trump, West returned to Twitter. On Saturday night, Musk released the results of a Twitter poll he had established asking people if Trump should be given another chance “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.” After the attack on the U.S. Capitol two days earlier on January 8, 2021, Trump’s Twitter account reappeared on the platform.
