Kevin Magnussen claims a pole position for the first time at the Brazilian Grand Prix

At the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen made a big splash by securing pole position in his Haas car for the sprint race on Saturday.

The Dane, who made his Formula 1 comeback this season after a one-year absence, won his and his team’s maiden pole at Interlagos with an outstanding display.

Before a red flag and a downpour, Magnussen completed the lone dry lap.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull will start behind him in the sprint race on Saturday.

Lewis Hamilton, a teammate of Mercedes’ George Russell, came in eighth.

And there was humiliation for Ferrari, which sent Charles Leclerc out on intermediate tyres for the start of the final session, the latest in a string of strategy blunders this season.

Leclerc was informed that everyone else had completed a lap and that he would start in 10th after Ferrari let themselves to be misled by the weather forecast that forecasted rain.

When it became clear that the weather would be too slick for anyone to perform better once the practice resumed, Magnussen was in shock and beaming ear to ear in the car. He later jumped out of the car and joined his crew in celebration.
