In his farewell Nou Camp appearance for Barcelona, Gerard Pique received an emotional standing ovation as they defeated Almeria 2-0 in La Liga.
When he was removed from the game in the 84th minute, he sobbed as he hugged his teammates, coach Xavi, and the entire Barca bench.
After Tuesday’s trip to Osasuna, the 35-year-old will retire, albeit it’s uncertain whether he’ll take the field.
After the game he gave a speech on the pitch, saying: “I was born here and I will die here.”
He added: “When you get older, you realise that sometimes to love is to let go. I’m convinced that I’ll be here again in the future.
“I love Barca. That’s why I consider it’s the right moment to go. This is not a goodbye.”
On his final night at the Nou Camp, he received a number of tributes.
The team wore shirts with Pique’s name and the number three on the back, and he entered the field with his two boys after being appointed captain.
