This week, a Florida teen made headlines for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from her grandma and giving the money to her friends.
The incident occurred at Lake Weir Middle School in Summerfield, when the authorities were alerted to many reports of a student giving out large sums of money to her classmates, according to the Miami Herald. According to deputies, when school personnel examined the teen’s backpack, they found around $2,500 in cash.
The student originally claimed to have obtained the funds from an unnamed former pupil who “wanted the money disseminated,” but she eventually confessed to breaking into her grandmother’s safe with a screwdriver and stealing roughly $13,500. It’s unknown why the teenager stole the money and then distributed it “in increments of $200, $400, and $700,” according to an arrest complaint.
According to officials, just around $700 of the money distributed has been found, leaving about $10,000 unaccounted for. Jason Jacobs, the principal of Lake Weir Middle School, addressed the situation in a letter to parents, pleading with them to have any cash their kids may have gotten from the accused adolescent returned.
