Coolio, ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ Rapper, Dies at 59

Just hours after Coolio’s death was announced, his longtime manager Jarez confirmed the information to TMZ on Wednesday. According to Jarez, the renowned artist went to the bathroom while visiting a friend’s house in Los Angeles. The friend started calling out to Coolio when he saw that the rapper hadn’t returned in a timely manner but received no response. Later, Coolio was discovered by the friend on the restroom floor.

Emergency services were called right away, according to TMZ, and they soon showed up at the residence. Artis Leon Ivey Jr.’s son, Coolio, was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMTs believe he passed away from cardiac arrest, according to Jarez, even though authorities have not yet confirmed a cause of death. Police stated that they are looking into the death but have not discovered any indications of misdeeds or drug or related gear.

In 1987, the father of six from Compton released his debut single, “Whatcha Gonna Do?” He immediately established himself in the L.A. rap scene. He later signed a contract with Tommy Boy Records and issued his debut solo album, It Takes a Thief, in 1994. The album featured “Fantastic Voyage” in addition to tracks from Poetic Justice like “Smokin Stix” and “Sticky Fingers.”

The title track from Coolio’s 1995 sophomore album, “Gangsta’s Paradise,” was unquestionably his biggest hit. The official soundtrack for Michelle Pfeiffer’s Dangerous Minds included the chart-topping song with R&B singer L.V. Coolio later won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and an MTV Video Music Award for Best Rap Video for “Gangsta’s Paradise.”
