In 2026, Audi is scheduled to make its Formula 1 debut.
On Friday, Markus Duesmann, the chairman of the Audi board, announced that the German automaker had formally registered as an F1 power-unit manufacturer.
Audi is yet to specify if it will manage its own team, as is expected, or just provide engines.
According to Duesmann, the choice was taken as a result of new regulations that include a larger electrical component in engines and entirely sustainable fuels.
By the end of the year, Audi said it would reveal the team with which they will be collaborating.
F1 president Stefano Domenicali said: “This is a major moment for our sport that highlights the huge strength we have as a global platform that continues to grow.
“It is also a big recognition that our move to sustainably-fuelled hybrid engines in 2026 is a future solution for the automotive sector. We are all looking forward to seeing the Audi logo on the grid and will be hearing further details from them on their plans in due course.”
