The Redeem Team, a documentary about the 2008 USA Olympic men’s basketball team victory in Beijing, was unveiled by LeBron James’ media company Uninterrupted and Netflix on Friday.
The documentary will include never-before-seen video of the Kobe Bryant-led team and is the first time the International Olympic Committee and Netflix have worked together. After a disappointing showing at the 2004 Summer Olympics, the men’s basketball team that helped the United States win that year earned the moniker “Redeem Team.” LeBron, Dwyane Wade, and Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski are among those who will be interviewed for the documentary, which claims to reveal how the team’s players were chosen.
Filmmaker Jon Weinbach is in charge of directing the documentary, which will make its Netflix premiere on October 7. Along with LeBron, Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Phillip Bryon of Uninterrupted, Wade is a project executive producer.
“In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball!” said Wade upon the announcement of the documentary. “I’m excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team — The Redeem Team!”
Olympic Channel Services GM Mark Parkman added that documentary, and the team featured in it, “represents the very best of what the Olympics are all about.
