According to French media sources, Idrissa Gana Gueye did not play in Paris Saint-4-0 Germain’s win against Montpellier on Saturday because he refused to wear a shirt with the rainbow flag on it.
The former Everton midfielder was in the PSG squad for the trip, but his name was not on the team sheet.
Mauricio Pochettino, the manager, disclosed the player “had to leave the team sheet for personal reasons. But he isn’t injured”.
According to the French publication L’Equipe, Gueye, who is from Senegal, missed the same round of games last season due to “stomach problems.”
The midfielder’s absence sparked speculation that he had missed the match owing to the PSG shirts’ LGBT-themed design on the backs.
As part of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia on May 17, Ligue 1 teams wore LGBT printing on their shirts and captains armbands were also worn.
