Sergio Aguero thinks the new statue of him, unveiled to commemorate Manchester City’s first Premier League triumph, recalls the “best moment of my life.”
The statue, which was inaugurated at the Etihad Stadium, honors Aguero’s goal in the fourth minute of injury time in the 2011-12 season’s last game.
City won their first Premier League championship in the Abu Dhabi era thanks to this goal.
“It was the best moment of my life,” said Aguero.
“For me that moment changed my life, changed the club and everything. That moment always will be in my heart.”
The galvanised steel statue of Argentine Aguero, created by artist Andy Scott, was unveiled on Friday, joining sculptures of other City icons Vincent Kompany and David Silva on the east side of the Etihad.
Aguero’s strike against QPR in 2012, which prevented Manchester United from winning the championship, “changed everything,” according to City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak.
“Khaldoon said the truth,” Aguero responded. “We don’t know what would have happened if we’d lost the Premier League that year.
“That year changed everything because the next years we started winning more titles.”
With 184 goals in 275 appearances, the striker is the fourth-highest scorer in Premier League history, having won 15 major titles in ten years with City.
Sculptor Scott said: “It has been an honour to work on a project that means so much to Manchester City fans around the world in celebration of such an important player in the life of this football club.”
Aguero, 33, left City for Barcelona last summer, but his stay was cut short because he was diagnosed with a heart issue that forced him to retire.
