After being “summoned” by its owner, a driverless Tesla slammed into a $3 million private plane, according to a video shared on Reddit on Thursday.
According to the Reddit user, the incident occurred at Felts Field near Spokane, Washington, at an event held by aircraft manufacturer Cirrus. A Cirrus Vision Jet, costing between $3 million and $3.5 million, was verified to Insider by a Cirrus official.
According to the individual who took the video, the Tesla owner was utilizing the “Smart Summon” mode, which allows the car to leave a parking spot and maneuver around obstacles while remaining in the owner’s sight.
According to Tesla’s website, the Smart Summon feature is “designed to allow you to move Model Y to your location (using your phone’s GPS as a target destination) or to a location of your choice, maneuvering around and stopping for objects as necessary.”
The company adds, “This is useful for moving Model Y out of a tight parking spot, through puddles, or helping you retrieve your car while carrying packages. You must maintain a clear line of sight between you and Model Y and closely monitor the vehicle and its surroundings at all times.”
It’s not the first time the autopilot feature has caused a crash. A Tesla owner took to Twitter in September 2019, just after Smart Summon was initially rolled out, to share a video of their self-driving car nearly colliding with another vehicle when the feature was enabled.
