Footage from the Wanda Metropolitano’s tunnel has revealed the full scope of the chaos that erupted after Manchester City’s stunning Champions League victory against Atletico Madrid.
Following their triumph in Manchester last week, City advanced to the competition’s semi-finals after a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate in the Spanish capital saw them progress 1-0 on aggregate. The game, however, deteriorated into chaos in the closing moments, spilling over into the tunnel after the final whistle.
After Atletico’s Felipe struck out at Phil Foden, who was sporting a bandaged head following a brutal challenge from the defender in the first half, after the midfielder had leaped above his tackle, a scuffle ensued in the 90th minute. Stefan Savic immediately stormed over and attempted to drag Foden back into the pitch, enraging both sets of players, substitutes, and supporters.
Savic, a former City player, was in the center of it all, appearing to headbutt Raheem Sterling and then tugging at Jack Grealish’s hair when the playmaker had some harsh words for him. Felipe was fired as a result of his involvement, while Savic managed to get away with merely a warning.
City held on for the nine minutes of injury time, but tensions remained high after the final whistle, with allegations surfacing that Grealish and Savic were involved in another brawl as they exited the field.
