Two fans die and over 20 injured after riot during Mexican match between Queretaro and Atlas

Violence erupted among the crowd during a top-flight match in Mexico, injuring at least 22 people.

When fighting spilled onto the field at La Corregidora stadium, the Liga MX match between Queretaro and Atlas was called off after 63 minutes.

Before being sent to the locker room, some players sought to quiet down the fans.

Two people were critically hurt, according to local police, and nine people were brought to the hospital in total.

When the game was called off, Atlas was leading 1-0.

Liga MX president Mikel Arriola said all Sunday’s matches have been suspended “in solidarity with the people affected”.

“Those responsible for the lack of the security at the stadium will be exemplarily punished,” he wrote on Twitter.

“The safety of our players and fans is priority!”
