On Monday afternoon, a new tweet from Mercedes’ account put any residual questions about Lewis Hamilton’s future to rest, confirming that he will continue in Formula One until 2022.
Following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December, when he was controversially denied the world championship on the penultimate lap after Michael Masi’s Safety Car request cleared the door for Max Verstappen to win, the Briton fell silent on social media.
In an unprecedented and very contentious decision, Masi just let vehicles between Lewis and Max to unlap themselves before allowing the field to race in one last flying lap.
And Hamilton’s quiet after the chequered flag said a lot in January and early February, with talk rising that he was contemplating his future and possibly retiring from the sport, which would have been a big pity.
However, he broke his quiet earlier this month by posting a ‘I’m back’ message across his social media accounts, and as the days have passed, it’s grown increasingly probable that Hamilton will stay in the sport until 2022.
However, there was no official indication that Hamilton would return to the grid in 2022; rather, he was just active on social media again.
That has changed today, with Mercedes highlighting Hamilton’s entrance for the 2022 season on the first day of their new car’s launch week on Friday, with the following message on social media:
