Scott Pilgrim anime series is in development at Netflix

An anime series based on the blockbuster comic novel Scott Pilgrim is now in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter. After Edgar Wright’s cult blockbuster Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which starred Michael Cera as the title character, this program would be the second adaption based on the graphic novel series. Netflix and UCP, the studio behind The Umbrella Academy and Chucky, are collaborating on this new series.

Bryan Lee O’Malley, the original illustrator and creator of the Scott Pilgrim comic novel, is now working on the prospective series as a writer and executive producer alongside BenDavid Grabinski. Are You Afraid of the Dark? is being revived on Nickelodeon, and Grabinski is the showrunner. If things go according to plan, the two will be the showrunners for the Scott Pilgrim series. The series will be animated by Science SARU (Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, The Heike Story). Eunyoung Choi will produce the program, which will be directed by Abel Gongora. An executive producer will be Edgar Wright.

Between 2004 and 2010, six volumes of the original graphic book series were published. The indie series defied expectations and went on to sell millions of copies. In 2010, Edgar Wright converted the series into a film, which was a box office flop but went on to become a big cult sensation in the years that followed. Scott Pilgrim, a young hipster in a band who falls into difficulty when he is forced to combat his girlfriend’s seven nasty exes, is the protagonist of both the comic books and the film. Along with Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Mark Webber, Allison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, and Brie Larson appeared in the 2010 picture.

Because Scott Pilgrim still has a devoted following, adapting the series for the tiny screen seems like the ideal solution. Also, since Scott Pilgrim was influenced by manga, adapting the story into an anime is a natural fit. Because this series is still in its early phases, anticipate more and more details to slowly but steadily emerge.
