Bob Dole, a World War II soldier who later became a long-serving U.S. Republican senator and presidential contender, has away at the age of 98.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation confirmed the news. “It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep,” the foundation wrote. “At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years.”
The announcement comes after Dole revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and that he was starting treatment many months ago.
