Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes driver, confesses to having championship concerns following the Mexican Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has stated that if Red Bull can sustain their pace from Mexico for the remaining races of the season, he and his Mercedes team will be in ‘trouble’ in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ title fights.

Momentum is a strong thing in Formula One, and it now appears to be with Max Verstappen and his team, with the Dutchman leading Hamilton by 19 points and the Bulls reducing the distance to Mercedes to just one point in recent weeks.

Indeed, they were quite fast on Sunday despite a bad qualifying performance, and Lewis did well to finish second, with Verstappen simply too quick to be prevented from winning in Mexico City.

With that pace in mind, Hamilton believes that if Red Bull maintains this level of performance for the following four races, it will be difficult to prevent them from claiming a double championship:

“Obviously, 19 points is a lot of points.

“He’s had a lot of wins this year.

“I think with their superior speed, if they were to carry that into the next [races], then we may be in trouble – or we will be in trouble.

“I don’t know if they’ll be using that huge wing that they had on. Naturally, we’ll find out when we get there, but I hope we’re closer.”
